Baby & Infant Osteopathy

Gentle care for
your little one,
from day one.

As a baby osteopath in Auckland, I offer safe, evidence-informed osteopathic care for newborns and infants, supporting comfort, movement, feeding, and development from the very first days of life.

Why Babies?

Birth is hard work — for babies too

The birth process — however it unfolds — places significant physical demands on a baby's body. Compression, twisting, and moulding through the birth canal, or the rapid delivery of a caesarean, can leave residual tension in the skull, neck, spine, and surrounding tissues.

For most babies, this resolves naturally in the first few weeks. But for some, it can contribute to discomfort, feeding difficulties, unsettled behaviour, or restricted movement.

Osteopathic treatment for babies is extremely gentle — using very light touch to release tension and support the body's natural ability to self-correct. Many babies find it deeply relaxing.

What I Help With

Common reasons parents bring their baby

These are the most frequent presentations I see — though every baby is different, and I'm always happy to discuss whether osteopathy might help with something not listed here.

Torticollis & Head Preference

Torticollis & Head Preference

Torticollis — where a baby consistently turns or tilts their head to one side — is one of the most common reasons parents bring their newborn to see me. It can develop during pregnancy or birth, and if left unaddressed, may affect feeding, sleep, and skull shape. Gentle osteopathic treatment can help release tension in the neck and surrounding structures, restoring comfortable, symmetrical movement.

Signs to look for

  • Head preference (always turning one way)
  • Neck stiffness or restricted rotation
  • Flat spot developing on one side of the head (plagiocephaly)
  • Difficulty feeding on one side
  • Asymmetrical posture or body tension

Feeding Difficulties

Feeding Difficulties

Feeding difficulties in newborns can be distressing for both baby and parents. While there are many possible causes, tension in the jaw, neck, or cranial base — often from the birth process — can make latching, sucking, and swallowing uncomfortable or inefficient. Osteopathy can gently address these structural factors, often working alongside lactation consultants and other feeding specialists.

Signs to look for

  • Difficulty latching or maintaining latch
  • Clicking or slipping off the breast
  • Preference for one breast
  • Excessive wind, reflux, or discomfort after feeding
  • Slow weight gain related to feeding mechanics
  • Jaw or tongue tension

Baby Tension & Unsettled Behaviour

Baby Tension & Unsettled Behaviour

Some babies are simply unsettled — difficult to soothe, uncomfortable in certain positions, or seemingly in discomfort without an obvious cause. This can sometimes be related to physical tension carried from the birth process. Cranial and structural osteopathy can help release this tension, supporting a calmer, more comfortable baby — and a more rested family.

Signs to look for

  • Excessive crying or difficulty settling
  • Arching of the back
  • Discomfort lying flat
  • Preference for being held upright
  • Difficulty sleeping or short sleep cycles
  • General irritability or tension in the body

Digestive Comfort & Colic

Digestive Comfort & Colic

Colic, wind, reflux, and constipation are common in the early weeks and months. While not all digestive discomfort has a structural cause, osteopathic treatment — particularly visceral techniques — can help support the nervous system and digestive function, reducing discomfort and improving gut motility.

Signs to look for

  • Colic-like crying (especially evenings)
  • Excessive wind or bloating
  • Reflux or frequent posseting
  • Constipation or irregular bowel movements
  • Discomfort after feeds
  • Tummy tightness or guarding

Is This Right for My Baby?

When to consider bringing your baby in

You don't need a referral, and you don't need to wait until things are serious. If any of the following apply, it's worth a conversation:

  • Your baby had a long, fast, or assisted birth (forceps or ventouse)
  • Your baby always turns their head to one side
  • Feeding is painful, difficult, or inconsistent
  • Your baby is very unsettled and hard to soothe
  • You've noticed a flat spot developing on their head
  • Your baby arches their back or seems uncomfortable lying flat
  • Something just feels "off" and you'd like a thorough check

A Note for Parents

"You know your baby best. If something feels off, trust that instinct."

I see many parents who've been told their baby is "just colicky" or will "grow out of it." Sometimes that's true. But sometimes there's a structural reason for the discomfort — and addressing it early makes a real difference.

You're always welcome to call or email before booking if you'd like to talk through whether osteopathy might help your baby. There's no pressure and no obligation.

Your First Visit

What to expect at your baby's appointment

01

Birth & health history

We start with a detailed conversation about your pregnancy, birth, and how your baby has been since. I want to understand the full picture — feeding, sleep, behaviour, and any concerns you have.

02

Gentle hands-on assessment

I'll observe your baby's posture, movement, and responses, then use very light touch to assess tension patterns in the skull, neck, spine, and body. Your baby can be held, lying down, or feeding — whatever works best.

03

Treatment at your baby's pace

Treatment is adapted entirely to your baby on the day. Techniques are extremely gentle — most babies remain calm or even fall asleep. We go at their pace, always.

04

Guidance & next steps

You'll leave with a clear explanation of what I found, what we're working on, and what to expect. I'll also share any simple things you can do at home to support your baby between sessions.

Common Questions

Frequently asked

How old does my baby need to be?

There's no minimum age — I regularly see babies from just a few days old. In fact, the earlier we can address any tension or restriction, the easier it tends to be to resolve. That said, it's never too late to seek help.

Is osteopathic treatment safe for newborns?

Yes. Treatment for babies is extremely gentle — nothing like the techniques used for adults. I use very light touch, particularly cranial osteopathy, which involves subtle pressure that babies typically find calming rather than distressing.

My baby cried the whole way through — is that normal?

Some babies do cry during treatment, especially if they're already unsettled or tired. Crying doesn't mean treatment isn't working or that your baby is in pain — it's often just their way of processing. Many babies settle during or after the session.

How many sessions will my baby need?

Most babies respond well within 2–4 sessions. Some need just one or two; others with more complex presentations may need a few more. I'll give you a realistic picture after the first appointment.

Should I bring anything to the appointment?

Just your baby and anything you need to keep them comfortable — nappies, a change of clothes, a dummy if they use one. If you're breastfeeding, you're very welcome to feed during the session if needed. Bring any relevant birth notes or referral letters if you have them.

Can I stay with my baby during treatment?

Absolutely — you'll be with your baby the entire time. I encourage parents to ask questions and stay involved throughout. Your presence is reassuring for your baby and helps me understand what you're observing at home.
