What to expect at your first appointment

First appointments are usually 45-60 minutes. Here is exactly what happens -- so you can arrive feeling calm and prepared, not wondering what you've signed up for.

How the appointment unfolds

Every appointment follows a similar structure, though the balance of time shifts depending on your needs.

01

Arrival & welcome

5 min

When you arrive, you'll be welcomed into a calm, private treatment room. There's no waiting room rush -- your appointment time is yours. If you have any access needs or would like to bring a support person, just let us know in advance.

02

Case history

10--15 min

We'll start with a conversation. Dewi will ask about what's brought you in, your health history, any medications, and your goals for treatment. There are no wrong answers -- the more context you can share, the better. You don't need to prepare anything in advance.

03

Assessment

10 min

Dewi will observe your posture and movement, and use gentle hands-on assessment to understand how your body is functioning. You may be asked to stand, sit, or move in certain ways. Everything is explained as it happens, and you can ask questions at any point.

04

Treatment

20--30 min

Treatment is tailored to what your body needs on the day. Techniques may include soft tissue massage, gentle joint mobilisation, stretching, or cranial osteopathy. Nothing is done without your consent. If anything feels uncomfortable, say so -- the approach can always be adjusted.

05

Debrief & next steps

5--10 min

At the end of the session, Dewi will explain what was found and what was treated. You'll get honest advice about how many sessions might help, any exercises or self-care to try at home, and whether a follow-up is recommended. There's no pressure to book again on the spot.

What to wear

You don't need to buy anything special. Comfort is the priority.

  • Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing you can move in
  • Shorts or leggings are ideal if you have a lower back or hip issue
  • You may be asked to remove shoes and socks
  • A gown or draping is always available if needed

Common questions

How long is the first appointment?
Initial appointments are 60 minutes. Follow-up appointments are typically 45 minutes.
Do I need to bring anything?
No. Just yourself. If you have recent scans, X-rays, or a referral letter, feel free to bring those -- but they're not required.
Will I be in pain after the appointment?
Some people feel a little tender or tired after their first session, especially if the body hasn't been worked on before. This usually settles within 24--48 hours. Drink plenty of water and rest if needed.
Can I bring someone with me?
Yes, absolutely. You are welcome to bring a support person, partner, or whānau member. For children, a parent or guardian must be present.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
Please give as much notice as possible -- ideally 24 hours. Each clinic has its own cancellation policy, which will be shown when you book online.
Is the clinic accessible?
Accessibility varies by location. Please check the Locations page for details on each clinic, or get in touch and we can help you find the most suitable option.
